TheTrue Cost is an incredible film that puts a human face on the global impact of the garment industry,” said Karina Kogan, EVP digital for Participant Media.  “We are so pleased to team up with EILEEN FISHER for the campaign to encourage consumers to think about the affects their clothing choices have on people who make them and our planet at large.”

“The True Cost’ paints a clear picture of the serious issues the fashion industry faces around the human and social challenges of how clothes are made,” said Eileen Fisher, Founder and Chief Creative Officer. “My company is on a path to be fully sustainable but in order to make a bigger impact in the world, the fashion industry must come together.  I hope this film helps us unite faster, and with TakePart.com we can also encourage consumers to begin a conversation.”

The True Cost, directed by Andrew Morgan, is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?  The True Cost is a story about clothing — the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world.  Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and features interviews with industry influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

The True Cost campaign at TakePart.com/truecost continues the conversation with in-depth videos and editorial exploring the opportunities and impact of the fashion industry, as well as, exclusive clips from the film. The campaign also offers ways for readers to get involved and be a part of the solution to the issues covered. Through TakePart’s proprietary action platform, TAP, readers can take a pledge to change their fashion consumption habits, ask brands to compensate survivors and families of victims of the Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh, and strengthen protections for farmworkers against pesticides.   The campaign is also giving away 1,000 downloads of the movie (normally $9.99*).

“I’m thrilled that Participant Media’s TakePart and Eileen Fisher have joined us to support the film,” said director Andrew Morgan.  “Together they can help us reach even more consumers with the message that what you wear has a human and environmental cost and your choice in what to purchase can make an impact.”

The True Cost will be released May 29 in theaters in New York (IFC Center), Los Angeles (Laemmle Music Hall) and other markets and simultaneously will be released on VOD platforms and DVD/Blu-ray (at www.truecostmovie.com).

About the Film

Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

The documentary is focused on the fashion industry around the world, examining where we are (including the mind-blowing fact that we have seen a 500% increase in clothing consumption in the past two decades), how we got here (including how the U.S. went from producing over 90% of its clothing in the 1960s to just 3% today), and how we can create a better future moving forward.

Filmmaker Andrew Morgan introduces audiences to the surprising human and environmental impacts of the global fashion industry – including the trend of “fast fashion” from leading companies like H&M, Zara, Gap and other global clothing retailers – and simultaneously shows us what some remarkable individuals are doing across the globe to offer an alternative in the form of designers like Stella McCartney, fashion executives, activists and journalists who are pushing for an ethical and sustainable future for global fashion.
