Gigi Robinson: Redefining Beauty and Advocacy in the Digital Age

Meet Gigi Robinson: The Sports Illustrated Swim Search Finalist and Chronic Illness Advocate Taking GenZ by Storm

Gigi Robinson is a force to be reckoned with in the content creation world, showcasing her diverse range of talents and passions. Her advocacy for chronic illness and body positivity, coupled with her beauty and intelligence, has solidified her as a thought leader among GenZ. Born and raised in Manhattan, the 24-year-old New Yorker is a graduate of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and the University of Southern California where she graduated Cum Laude with a BFA in 2020. She continued her studies at USC’s Iovine and Young Academy, earning an M.S. in Innovation Design, Business & Technology in 2022.

Diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder, at the age of 11, Gigi has learned to navigate daily life while dealing with chronic pain. In December 2022, she received a diagnosis of Endometriosis, which has given her answers and a better understanding of her pain. Using her experiences with chronic illness as a catalyst, she has become an advocate for others dealing with similar issues. Gigi is also passionate about mental health and body image, especially as it intersects with social media. Having experienced these struggles herself during her teenage years, she strives to be a role model for the next generation. Through social media, podcasts, and speaking engagements at various organizations and schools, Gigi spreads her message of positivity and self-acceptance.

In her downtime, Gigi makes time for her friends and family, including her beloved 15-year-old dog, Zoey. She enjoys nature walks, photography, and production, and is a self-proclaimed foodie. Despite her busy schedule, Gigi continues to inspire and make a positive impact in the world.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a model.

The funny thing is, I would not consider myself anything but a role model. I have always been told that I have a pretty face but I felt that my voice was more powerful. I knew that I could capitalize on my personality and combine that with my story to create change in the world. Though I have modelled in some large campaigns, it’s due to the work that I do as an advocate and a change-maker.

How do you see the representation of diverse models changing in the industry?

I think that we are taking a lot of the right steps to be more inclusive in modelling campaigns. I think that there is a lot more to be done however with actual merchandising in stores and what’s available. Including representation of different communities in advertisements is imperative to helping people feel seen, and empowered to express themselves through fashion.

How do you empower and inspire others who may not fit the traditional mould of a model?

If there is ever an instinct that you have to jump into a project, a new industry, or a new job, just do it and make sure you do it with confidence. I do not have modelling experience, however, I did have over a decade of photography experience. Through my practice, I helped to empower models and clients to look and feel their best selves through portraiture and posing. As I did this, I became super comfortable with my own body, further allowing me to help others! No matter what your body type is, you can model. It comes down to confidence.

How do you encourage your fans to stay confident and body positive in a world that often values a certain body type?

One of my favourite quotes is “what other people think about you is none of your business”. I truly believe that we are moving into a world where the younger generation (Z) is teaching older generations how to show up as they are instead of something that is marketed to us. Self-acceptance and love is the best thing that people can embody as they navigate day-to-day life. I always encourage people to think about the way that they feel about themselves in moments of joy, sadness, rage, anger, sensuality, bliss, etc. All of these feelings come from the heart, not from our physical body type or shape. And when you get to the point where you can accept your feelings as they come up, the way that you feel in your body will naturally empower you to live your most confident life!

What project are you most proud of?

Currently, I am going to be releasing my very first Children’s book, a Kid’s Book About Chronic Illness which will be available on March 19th, 2023! Writing this book gives me hope that the next generation of kids will be able to understand- with empathy and compassion- what others may be going through. I can not wait to get it out into the world!

Tell us about your podcast, “Everything You Need Is Within”. What inspired you to launch it and how do you hope to use your voice to inspire and encourage listeners?

My show was launched in 2021, as one of the first GenZ podcasts focused on creator mental health. I interview creators closely as they navigate the wild west of social media. Some creators discuss more depths of the creator economy while others focus on the advocacy work that they do. I was inspired to launch this series because I did not see a show that was highlighting young, up-and-coming voices online. I also wanted to encourage listeners that were contemplating entering the world of social media as a creator to listen to the realities that many of us faces, as well as advice on how to get started. Lastly, I wanted to create a space for advocates and activists to elevate their audience and communities so that GenZ can feel less alone as they grow up!

How do you approach working with brands and designers to ensure a positive and inclusive representation of all individuals?

There are so many different ways to work with brands and designers, but the best thing that one could do is research the brand’s commitment and action towards whatever cause and DEI commitments you support. I make sure to have a genuine connection to a brand before working with them AND always work with a variety of nonprofit organizations focused on mental health, ending world hunger and eating disorder prevention. I encourage creators to get started to find a few causes that they care about and work closely with an organization to use your platform for good.

What impact do you hope to have on the industry and society as a whole?

Hopefully, I can help more people be confident in as many ways as possible. I hope to inspire patients to have the courage to keep pushing for answers from their doctors, and students to find new ways to communicate with friends and faculty or anyone looking to love their mind and body. I am so grateful that my online platforms are a positive place on the internet, and always promise to put out uplifting positive content!

What is next for you?!

I am currently travelling for speaking gigs across the country, working on writing another book and creating content for my favourite brands. I am so excited for the rest of 2023 and can not wait to see what my 25th year of life has in store!

Gigi’s Holiday Rules

How would you describe your travel fashion style?

I typically travel comfy practical; a matching set, a jacket, my heaviest shoes (either sneakers or boots depending on the trip) and a big purse with loads of smaller bags inside!

What are your go-to items when packing for a trip?

I must always have a lip mask, sunscreen, extra pain medicine and a nail kit.

How do you balance comfort and style when travelling?

I love wearing layers on the plane, always bring multiple pairs of headphones in case one dies, and of course my camera. I make sure that I am always comfortable first and stylish second.

How do you plan your travel outfits and what factors do you consider?

I typically think of the events and activities that I am doing during my trip and try to multipurpose certain garments. I love accessorizing differently, with different bags, belts and jewellery! I also make lists of what I need for my trips with specific outfits planned out, and if I am feeling super over the top I will accessorize completely and put a photo of the outfit next to the activity I am going to wear it to.

Do you have any tips for maximizing space in a carry-on bag?

I love packing cubes and garment bags. I don’t travel without either of those things. I always make sure to have things categorized.. shoes, undergarments, bags and accessories, shirts, pants, dresses, skincare, makeup, etc. It helps me stay organized.

Do you have any specific fashion must-haves for long-haul flights?

Comfortability over looks, extra chargers and headphones, a book, a journal, and a list of work that you can cut out to get done for yourself.

What are some of your favourite travel fashion brands or designers?

I love Cuyana, Tumi, Beis, Away, Samsonite, Dagne Dover for travel bags, and love sets from lululemon, Athleta, and Vuori!
