Arrive

Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, offers an enchanting prelude to the sanctuary that awaits. Verdant rice terraces ripple across the horizon, sacred temples punctuate the landscape, and the slow cadence of island life envelops visitors in a sense of ease. Approaching Nag Shampa, the journey becomes ceremonial: the scent of frangipani drifts on the breeze, the jungle hums with life, and every turn reveals glimpses of the villa’s verdant surroundings.

Here, arrival is not merely physical; it is an invitation to transition from the everyday into a space where calm and beauty dominate. Guests are welcomed with a sense of intimacy and warmth, a reminder that they are not entering a hotel, but a home crafted with intention. Whether greeted with a cooling herbal drink or a quiet walk through flowering gardens, the first moments at Nag Shampa set the tone for a stay defined by mindfulness, luxury, and connection.

Sanctuary

The villas at Nag Shampa Private Estate exemplify understated elegance, where design, comfort, and intention meet seamlessly. Interiors blend natural textures—timber, stone, and bamboo—with bespoke furnishings, soft neutral palettes, and carefully selected art. Each suite opens directly onto lush gardens or the glimmering pool, creating private corners for reflection, reading, or simply observing the gentle sway of the jungle canopy.

Attention to detail is paramount: daybeds are perfectly positioned to capture morning light, expansive verandas invite quiet contemplation, and the linens and furnishings exude understated luxury. Here, the home becomes a canvas for stillness; every element is designed not to impress but to allow the senses to breathe, creating a rarefied environment where comfort and calm coexist in perfect harmony.

Nag Shampa redefines luxury, measuring it not in excess but in intentionality, subtlety, and the feeling of ease that pervades every space. It is a haven where guests can inhabit the present fully, and every corner of the villa serves as a reminder of the care and love that shaped it.

Savour

Dining at Nag Shampa is a journey of the senses, where fresh, local ingredients are celebrated in both traditional Balinese dishes and globally inspired creations. The culinary experience is intimate, personal, and thoughtful, designed to nourish both body and spirit. Guests might awaken to tropical fruits, coconut-infused pastries, and hand-pressed juices by the pool, or enjoy evening meals of delicate seafood and aromatic Balinese spices under the stars.

Menus are tailored to individual tastes, blending authenticity with innovation to create a dining experience that is as much about presence as flavour. Each meal is carefully orchestrated to encourage conversation, reflection, and slow enjoyment. Whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, dining at Nag Shampa transforms nourishment into ritual, allowing guests to engage fully with the tastes, textures, and atmosphere of the island in effortless style.

The act of dining here is inseparable from the surroundings: the soft rustle of leaves, the glow of evening lanterns, and the distant calls of native birds all contribute to a sensory narrative that is as memorable as the food itself.

Wander

Nag Shampa’s grounds offer an intimate sanctuary, but beyond the villa lies a world of discovery. The surrounding region of Ubud invites exploration, from secret temples and sacred waterfalls to verdant rice terraces that ripple like liquid emerald. Guided treks into the jungle reveal hidden treasures, while nearby villages offer insight into local life, traditions, and Balinese craftsmanship.

Wandering here is both an adventure and a meditation. Guests can lose themselves along meandering paths, pause in quiet gardens, or simply sit and observe the rhythm of the island’s natural beauty. The experience of exploration at Nag Shampa is about more than sightseeing; it is about reconnecting with nature, culture, and oneself. Every journey outward is mirrored by an inward reflection, offering a rare luxury: the freedom to discover and the space to be still.

Even within the villa’s boundaries, wandering becomes a gentle practice of mindfulness. Each turn and hidden corner, from shaded alcoves to secluded pavilions, offers a moment of serenity, inviting guests to slow their pace and breathe deeply in the presence of nature.

Reverie

Wellness at Nag Shampa is seamlessly integrated into the overall experience, with treatments and rituals that restore, rejuvenate, and inspire. Skilled therapists offer traditional Balinese massages, holistic body treatments, and personalised spa experiences designed to meet the needs of each guest. Sunrise yoga sessions overlooking the jungle, herbal soaks, or evening massages accompanied by the sounds of nature create a sense of immersion and complete relaxation.

Reverie here is more than a service; it is the essence of the stay. Every sensory element—from scent and sound to touch—works harmoniously to transport guests into a state of calm and renewal. It is a deliberate pause from the pace of modern life, a chance to reconnect with body and mind, and a moment of true restoration that lingers long after departure.

Nag Shampa elevates wellness from routine to art, blending physical care with emotional and spiritual nourishment. Each visit is a bespoke journey, designed to leave guests refreshed, centred, and inspired. The estate is managed by The Luxe Nomad, Asia-Pacific’s leading luxury vacation rental company known for its curated properties and exceptional service.

Behind the Sanctuary: Sam & Isabella Branson

Sam and Isabella Branson are the visionaries behind Nag Shampa, but their story extends far beyond the walls of their Balinese sanctuary. From a brief escape that blossomed into three transformative years on the island to building a space celebrated for its serenity, design, and spirit, the Bransons have always been guided by curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for life’s meaningful moments.

Now back in the UK, they continue to explore new creative pursuits while reflecting on the lessons and inspirations that emerged during their time in Bali. In this intimate conversation, Sam and Isabella share the story of their journey, the philosophy behind their work, and the enduring values that inform both their lives and the places they create.

How did your time in Bali change your perspective on life and creativity?

It’s a hard question to answer because the experience changed my perspective in so many ways. I think it’s largely because we went to Bali with the specific intention of raising our kids in nature. We were at a stage in our lives where we were open-minded and ready to explore a new way of being. Isabella had just stopped breastfeeding, and I was adjusting my work schedule to be able to work from home.

Bali became a journey of self-discovery – both for us and for our little family as we navigated life in a completely new place. It was also a time when I decided to finally focus on a lifelong, unrealised passion: music and songwriting. Bali is such an inspiring place, one that naturally invites connection and creative exploration.

Many people come to Bali to feel inspired and liberated – to find the confidence to pursue their passions, start new ventures, or take creative risks they might not have taken in their home countries. The island has a kind of magical energy, perhaps something to do with the volcanic soil that makes everything burst with life. Creativity seems to flow effortlessly there.

A huge part of our happiness came from the Balinese people themselves – some of the kindest, most grounded, and present individuals I’ve ever met. Their deep connection to nature, joyful spirit, sense of humour, and strong community values created a cultural environment that was truly wonderful to be part of.

What inspired you to build Nag Shampa, and how did the process shape you personally?

Isabella and I didn’t build Nag Shampa, we bought it from a wonderful couple who had poured a huge amount of love, thought and effort into it. When we took it over, we infused it with our own creativity and interiors, which amplified all the incredible work that had already been done and transformed it into an even more special sanctuary of nature and beauty for people to escape into.

The name Nag Shampa is evocative—what meaning does it hold for you?

Nag Shampa translates to, and is based on the meaning of “incense of love.” For us personally, it represents the evocative feelings that can arise when you step into an environment that draws you deeper into yourself. It’s an embodiment of our love, creating the perfect container for personal growth, connection, and celebration.

How do you approach creating spaces—or experiences—that feel both meaningful and timeless?

I think if anyone wants to create a timeless and meaningful environment, it has to incorporate nature. Nature is the greatest healer and the deepest source of presence. When we are in beautiful environments, creating spaces that integrate the natural surroundings into the living experience is fundamentally important. We must feel like we are part of the place we’re in – not separate from it. It always astounds me how people build insular buildings in stunning locations when they could be anywhere. If I’m in a gorgeous place like Bali, I want to feel, hear, see, smell, and interact with the environment I’m living in and alongside.

What principles guide your work and creative projects today?

My biggest muse is nature, and my relationship with it oscillates between discovering new things about myself and understanding my place in the wider world through different creative vehicles. People connect to themselves on a deeper level, which in turn inspires a more loving and compassionate way of being. Connection sparks imagination and action. I like to bring people together, share joy, and help them find their place in the wider world.

How has living in Bali influenced your approach to balance, mindfulness, and intentional living?

I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere where I’ve experienced a culture with such a strong sense of community and reverence for the world around them. Not only does their energy leave a lasting imprint on anyone who visits, but the Balinese people are fully in touch with a way of living that feels much more natural for us as humans, making you realise how much of the rest of the world has lost that way of interacting.

Since returning to the UK, what creative pursuits or projects are capturing your focus?

Really, my journey in music was forged during my time in Bali, and it has continued into my life back in the UK. I continue to make films, something I did before moving to Bali, which explore nuanced perspectives on important topics. I am currently the co-founder of HiddenLight Productions. While in Bali, I was on a voyage of self-discovery and completed my yoga and meditation teacher training, which allowed me to connect more deeply with a present way of being – a mindset that has infused everything I do with greater depth and curiosity.

How do you carry the spirit of Nag Shampa—the connection, calm, and authenticity—into your life now?

Sometimes gracefully, and sometimes with much difficulty! I feel that when you’re in an environment like Nag Shampa, everything around you pulls you into the present moment. In contrast, in the modern Western world, most of our surroundings seem to pull us away from ourselves, so we have to work much harder to cultivate the peace, presence, and serenity that an environment like Nag Shampa naturally provides.

What lessons from your journey in Bali do you hope to bring into future ventures?
  • Always understanding the importance of a strong sense of community, shared goals and beliefs, faith, and connection to something bigger than ourselves.
  • Trusting the energetics of life.
  • If there’s too much resistance and things aren’t in flow, it’s either not the right thing or not the right time.
What has been the most surprising or rewarding part of your journey as creators?

The opportunity to discover and express truth, and through that journey, to understand that the best truths are universal to all human experience – no matter where we are, where we come from, or what our stories may be.

How would you describe your ethos, or the values that guide both your personal and professional lives?

In short, my life philosophy is to live healthily, think positively, and feel honestly. I try to do at least one thing each day that makes me proud of myself, and I believe that if people were kinder to themselves, to each other, and to the spaces around them, the world could become a better place overnight.

If you could distill your story into three words, what would they be?

Surrendering to love.
