This month Nurse Karen shares her best tips on ensuring your dermal fillers heal properly and last all summer long. Follow Karen for more tips @greenvilleinjectornurse.

“Summer is here and while you’re working on the perfect Beach body and trying to plan your next sunny Retreat, you may want to get some cosmetic aesthetic treatments to improve the look of your complexion and enhance your facial features. Dermal fillers are one of the most popular non-invasive and non-surgical cosmetic treatment options due to their effective and instant results.” -Nurse Karen

One important question this summer is, can you go to the beach after getting dermal fillers?

That’s a good question and I get it a lot. From my experience, my patient’s skin can be sensitive after getting fillers so I advise them to stay out of the sun for at least a week after getting fillers. This is because the sun has a damaging effect on the skin after you’ve had fillers. The sun can slow healing and will also degrade the hyaluronic acid found in many filler treatments.

In addition to advising my patients to stay out of the sun after filler treatments, I also prescribe an aftercare plan to ensure the most effective results. Requires an SPF if they’re going to be outside after treatment. I tell my patients to cover their faces completely by wearing sunglasses or a wide-brim hat that does not allow much exposure to the sun. I caution them not to be outside for more than 20 minutes, even with protection.

Before my patients leave the office, I’ll be sure to send them home with a little reminder sheet and I’d be happy to share it with you as well.

1. Avoid the sun! Stay out of the sun for at least a week after treatment and avoid direct exposure for more than 20 minutes even with protection

2. Cover up! if you’re going to go outside, cover your face with sunglasses visor or wide brim hat

3. Use sunscreen.! Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher daily during the summer months. Reapply sunblock as needed.

4. Lip filler aftercare: After lip filler, keep your lips hydrated by applying a lip balm and an SPF.

5. Use antioxidant-rich skincare products to help the healing process after getting fillers.

6. Avoid tanning beds or spray tans for a few days after filler treatment if the filler injection area has left a bruise don’t try to get a tan. Wait until the bruise has faded.

7. If you are exposed to the sun and get sunburn See your doctor if you suspect sunburn skin to get treatment.

8. I want all my patients to look their best this summer so I advise them to Schedule their fillers at least a few weeks before their summer trip to give themselves time to recover from any side effects.

How important is sun protection after receiving dermal fillers?

Sun protection is crucial after receiving dermal fillers. UV exposure can significantly reduce the effectiveness and lifespan of your fillers. It’s essential to follow sun-protection guidelines to maintain your results.

What are some sun-protection products you recommend to ensure dermal fillers last?

To protect your dermal fillers and skin, I recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every few hours while in the sun.

My top recommendations:

  • Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50
  • EleVen by Venus Williams Unrivaled Sun Serum SPF 35 (for darker skin tones)
  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Face & Body Melt-In Sunscreen Milk SPF 60
  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50 Sun Stick for Sensitive Lips.
Always wear a hat outdoors.

They are essential after-filler and not only shield your gorgeous face from harmful ultraviolet rays but also accessorize beautifully with your favourite swimsuit and cover-up. I can’t go anywhere without my Gladys Tamez Hats to stay fashionable and covered.

Wear a scarf for more than an accessory.

For extra coverage, I love pairing my suits with my favourite Hermes scarf, the Cavalier en Hermes scarf 90. I’ve found similar looks in scarves on Amazon for a much more affordable option.

Never forget your sunglasses.

The one item I am obsessive about is my Dior Sunglasses. Eye protection is vital, and the FilDior S1U pair offers ample coverage. When travelling by sea and air, I opt for my SOJOS Vintage Oversized Square Sunglasses for Women, Retro Women’s Luxury Big Sun Glasses UV400 Protection SJ2194—they are a fraction of the cost, so I keep several on hand.

Lip Care.

Remember your lip care including keeping your lips exfoliated, moisturized, and protected. I created my own line of lip care products. Available at shopnursekaren.com.

After Lip injections, I recommend my NK Lip Healing Collagen Crystal Moisturizing Masks straight from the freezer to calm and comfort swollen lips. It keeps your lips moisturized and soothed. Apply my NK Nighttime Repairing Vegan Lip Mask on constant repeat.
