Behind the Lens with Robyn Damianos

Robyn Damianos’s journey from the catwalks of fashion capitals to the sandy shores of The Bahamas is a testament to her boundless creativity and unwavering passion for capturing beauty in all its forms. Originally discovered by Select Model Management in London at the age of 15, Robyn’s career as a fashion model saw her grace the pages of iconic magazines like VOGUE and Harper’s Bazaar, and walk the runways for renowned designers worldwide. However, it was during her time in front of the camera that her true passion for photography ignited.

Returning to her roots in the Bahamas, Robyn found inspiration in the natural splendour of her homeland, transitioning seamlessly into the role of a photographer. With a bright, vibrant and modern aesthetic, her work spans fashion, lifestyle, travel and commercial advertising photography, capturing the essence of island life with elegance and sophistication. From high-profile fashion campaigns to island-inspired fine art, Robyn infuses every project with creativity, organization, and a sense of fun.

Your transition from being a successful fashion model to an accomplished photographer is fascinating. What inspired this shift, and how has your experience in front of the camera influenced your approach behind it?

Transitioning from modelling to photography has been an incredible journey for me. My experience in front of the camera has profoundly influenced my approach behind it, giving me a unique perspective on the industry. As a former model, I developed a keen eye for composition, lighting and storytelling. I understand firsthand the nuances of posing and expression, which allows me to connect with and guide my subjects effectively and capture authentic moments. Additionally, my time in the fashion industry exposed me to a wide range of artistic influences and aesthetic styles, which I now draw upon in my photography. I’m also happiest when collaborating with others, I believe in fostering a supportive and collaborative environment on set. Creating a space where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their ideas leads to more meaningful and impactful work.

With a diverse portfolio spanning fashion, lifestyle, travel and commercial photography, how do you maintain a cohesive aesthetic while exploring different genres?

Growing up between Australia and The Bahamas, I feel most at home when shooting out on location at the beach. I am always paying attention to the direction, intensity and quality of light, as it can dramatically affect the mood and atmosphere of the photos. I love the natural glow of sunlight, and my artificial light setup mimics natural light to keep a consistent style throughout my portfolio.

Your work has been featured in numerous prestigious publications and campaigns
worldwide. Can you share a particularly memorable shoot or project that stands out to you, and what made it special?

I was featured as The Bahamas Fashion Photographer in the documentary series “Colours Of The Islands” which is currently airing on global networks and streaming TV channels. It’s been an honour to represent my country and showcase its beauty through my photography. Throughout the filming process, the TV crew followed me to various locations around the island as I photographed Courtney Spears, A.K.A The Bahamian Ballerina, against stunning backdrops. One photo from the shoot really stands out to me – it’s the one where Courtney is captured mid-leap above the ocean and white sandy beach. Dressed in head-to-toe Bahamian designer fashion, she’s reaching towards the sun with an air of grace and power. The image radiates positivity and resilience, symbolizing a message of moving onward and upward. It’s moments like these that remind me of the transformative power of photography and the ability to convey meaningful messages through visual storytelling.

Living in the Bahamas, you have a deep connection to its natural beauty. How does your environment influence your creative process, especially when capturing the essence of island life in your photography?

Growing up in the Bahamas deeply influences my photography. The vibrant colours of the ocean, the lush greenery, and the golden beaches serve as constant inspiration for me. When capturing the essence of island life, I’m drawn to moments that convey the warmth, tranquillity and authenticity of the Bahamas. The unique quality of natural light here, particularly during dawn and dusk, adds a magical touch to my photos, enhancing the mood and atmosphere.
Additionally, the rich cultural heritage of the Bahamas provides endless opportunities for exploration and storytelling. Overall, my environment instils in me a deep appreciation for the beauty that surrounds me and fuels my passion for capturing its essence through my lens.

You’ve had the opportunity to work with renowned photographers such as Steven Meisel and Corinne Day. What valuable lessons or insights did you gain from collaborating with them, and how have they shaped your own approach to photography?

Working with the industry’s most renowned photographers has been an invaluable experience that deeply influenced my approach to photography. Their mastery of evoking emotion and storytelling through imagery has been truly inspiring, prompting me to prioritize authenticity and narrative depth in my own work. One of my first modelling assignments was for a British VOGUE campaign, shot by the iconic Corinne Day. Her talent for putting new models at ease left a lasting impression on me. I gained a deeper understanding of how to connect with subjects and communicate posing effectively during a shoot. Having been on the other side of the lens, I understand the importance of making subjects feel empowered and at ease. Rather than simply capturing a moment, I strive to create technically flawless, timeless images that resonate with viewers on a deeper level.

What unique aspects of the Bahamian fashion scene do you aim to capture in your work, and how do you differentiate yourself in this competitive industry?

In my photography, I aim to capture the vibrant fusion of traditional Bahamian elements with contemporary fashion trends. I celebrate local talent, showcasing the creativity of Bahamian designers and artists. I also strive to convey the laid-back yet sophisticated vibe that defines Bahamian style, evoking the feeling of barefoot luxury and casual elegance. To differentiate myself in this competitive industry, I infuse my work with a distinct Bahamian flair, drawing inspiration from the vibrant colours, lush landscapes and cultural traditions of the Bahamas.

From high-profile fashion brands to luxury resorts, you’ve collaborated with a diverse range of clients. How do you tailor your creative vision to meet the specific needs and objectives of each client or project?

As a photographer in The Bahamas, versatility is key when working with clients ranging from high-profile fashion brands to luxury resorts. I adapt my creative vision to meet each client’s specific needs and objectives by immersing myself in their brand identity, values, and target audience. Communication is key throughout the process. I maintain an open dialogue with the client throughout, actively listening to their input, feedback, and expectations. This collaborative approach ensures that we’re always on the same page and working towards a shared vision. Drawing on my diverse skills and artistic influences, I bring a fresh perspective to each project, aiming to exceed expectations and deliver imagery that resonates with the audience and leaves a lasting impression.

Beyond photography, you’re also involved in island-inspired fine-art photography. Can you tell us more about this passion project and how it complements your commercial work?

I started out as a fine art photographer, creating island-inspired prints of The Bahamas. There is something so beautiful about water and light, and I find myself drawn to these elements in such a profound way. My clients often ask me to capture a few additional one-of-a-kind island scenery shots to enhance their collections for website launches, social media, and marketing campaigns. I’m continuously exploring ways to blend light and motion, refine composition and accentuate the vibrant colours of our island scenery in my photography.

Travel is a significant part of your life, both personally and professionally. How do your travel adventures with your family inspire and inform your photography?

Travelling with my family fuels my passion for photography and reinforces the importance of storytelling, connection and appreciation for the moments we share. Each adventure is an opportunity to grow as an artist and add a few more candid shots to the family album. Travelling with them is not just about snapping pics; it’s about capturing memories and telling stories that we’ll cherish forever.

Lastly, what advice would you offer to aspiring photographers, especially those looking to carve their niche in the industry and maintain longevity in their careers?

Practice, Practice, Practice. Treat every project, no matter its scale, with professionalism and respect for your team. Learn to work with natural light, as well as artificial lighting when needed. Keep your gear organized and maintained, and be prepared with backup cameras and equipment. Photography is a form of self-expression, so enjoy the process and let your creativity flow. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things. Your passion and enthusiasm will shine through in your work.

Robyn’s Holiday Rules

Top travel destination?

That’s a tough one! I love exploring the islands of The Bahamas! Even though I grew up here, I still find there is so much to discover. I also love California, Japan, and Italy… The list goes on!

Quick tip for staying stylish yet comfortable while on the road?

Plan your travel outfits and make a list of what you want to bring before you start packing the suitcase. Cover the essentials, choose outfits that are comfortable, less likely to wrinkle in the suitcase and go well together before adding in a few of your favourite fashion pieces. I like to keep things simple. If the goal is to relax and unwind, the last thing I want to be thinking about it “What am I going to wear today?”

Favourite accessory you always pack for a photo shoot abroad?

My collection of straw hats has grown steadily since I started photography, and if there isn’t one on my head then it’s likely being used as a prop for the photoshoot. We added one of my favourite large vintage hats to the style board for the cover story featuring Tika Camaj.

The best-kept secret for finding Instagram-worthy spots in a new city?

Become an early riser! If you wake up early and set out on a photo walk around the city, you’ll suddenly discover so many amazing spots for Instagram. You’ll notice things you might have missed later in the day when the streets are crowded with tourists.

Dream hotel amenity: rooftop pool or cozy fireplace?

Rooftop pool! I’ll take warmer weather and sunshine over the cold any day.

Favourite destination for fashion inspiration?

I was lucky enough to travel the world, living in the fashion centres of Sydney, Paris, Milan, Tokyo, London and New York during my modelling days. Every city has something unique to offer, but New York left a real impression on me. The fashion scene had incredible energy. Whenever I visit Manhattan, I love to set up creative photoshoots with my favourite stylists, makeup artists and models.

Best way to beat jet lag and stay energized during a hectic travel schedule?

I always carry my favourite Slip Sleep Mask in my hand luggage, It’s so soft and helps me drift to sleep. And I make sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after the flight. Also, power naps are a photographer’s best friend! I can fall asleep almost anywhere, which probably comes from having a Jetset lifestyle.

Go-to travel outfit?

It really depends on how long the flight duration is! I usually wear leggings or yoga pants with a top and a comfortable jacket on long flights. But if I am taking the quick 20-minute flight between Florida and The Bahamas I’ll usually wear my favourite pair of Paige Denim Jeans with a linen shirt or t-shirt and blazer.

Quick fix for a fashion emergency while on a shoot in a remote location?

My amazing photography assistant! They are always prepared to jump in and help out when challenges arise. For example, I was photographing a huge couture gown on a model at a remote beach location in The Bahamas when the zipper suddenly got stuck. The stylist was unable to fix it, and we were close to sunset so to get the shot before time ran out my assistant hid behind the model and held the dress in place.

Most underrated travel essential that you never leave home without?

I’m a lifetime fan of Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. It works wonders for my skin, and I never travel without it. The air inside an airplane cabin can be so dry, and while I’m constantly trying new skincare products Elizabeth Arden has been in my handbag forever.
